    A lunar eclipse may be complete or partial. When the moon is only partly in the earth's shadow we see a partial eclipse.
    Note that the yellow cone is showing the part of the sun's rays that is blocked by the moon.

    When and if the moon moves completely into the shadow, the eclipse becomes total.
