The Functions of Blood
  - transports 
 
  
  	- oxygen and carbon dioxide 
 
    - food molecules (glucose, lipids, amino acids) 
 
    - ions (e.g., Sodium, Calcium, bicarbonate) 
 
    - wastes (e.g., urea, carbon dioxide) 
 
    - hormones 
 
	- heat
 
through the body
  - defence of the body against infections and other foreign materials. 
 
Our Blood System consists of three parts: 
  - the vessels (pipes) which transport the blood around the body
 
  - the actual blood
 
  - the heart, which pumps the blood through the vessels
