Our friend sleeping so soundly on the bed is pushing down on the bed with his weight. The bed pushes back on him with an equal force in the opposite direction. (Newtons Second Law) otherwise he would fall through the bed and keep right on going!
An object that is not moving, ie at rest or stationary, is doing so because it has at least one pair of balanced forces act on it.
What is happening for an object, say a car or plane, moving at constant speed. ie not slowing down, speeding up, or changing direction? Are all the forces in balance?
